A short story prequel to the award-winning Twelve Kingdoms fantasy series, where a shapeshifting sorceress uses magic to beguile a warrior to save her kingdom.

A wounded warrior trapped by the sorceress who knows him better than he does himself…

General Uorsin escapes the last devastating battle, only to find himself alone on a mountain, feverish and no closer to finding the paradise that drives him on. Salena, greatest shapeshifter and magic-worker of her people, springs the trap she’s set to protect her land—and to prevent the ravager Uorsin from ever reaching it.

Together, they spend a night setting the terms that will determine not only the rest of their lives, but the fates of the peoples of the Twelve Kingdoms—and the thirteenth.

This is the prequel to the Twelve Kingdoms books :)

Ok so this was a short story, not a lot to say. We go back in time to see how Uorsin (that bastard) and Salena first met and made their deal. Their deal that now shapes their children. And well, she was brave, I could never have done what she did...

Negotiation The Twelve Kingdoms Book 0 eBook Jeffe Kennedy Reviews

Anything written by Kennedy and especially the Twelve Kingdoms series is amazing. If you love fantasy, good plot, and romance you need to try this series.
Great teaser about relationship between the parents of the main characters in The Teelve Kingdoms trilogy. Loved reading from the mother's point of ciew since she is long dead in the rest of the series.
It would have been nice to have read this little bit before the other 3.
Still good. Filled in some spots.
The perfect topper for the series, letting readers know "this is how it all began" with just the right about of info. Short and perfect and ohmygosh does it pack emotional punches.
This short story of the first meeting of the 'High King' and the 'Witch' is a back and forth insight into what each was thinking as well as feeling. So glad I read this after Talon of the Hawk. It helped me understand both characters and what drove them to make the decision to unite.
The author seems to be trying for super-difficult beauty-beast match ups, more or less in the style of Christine Pope, but stretching the abuse by the beast even further. In Mark of the Tala she more less succeeds if we grant a little tolerance. There is this unbelievable back-story of the girls' mother and Uorsin, which we simply take as history in the trilogy, and in this quite short novella the elaboration of it of course fails.

So I have no complaint about the writing style or the page by page development. It is as good as it can be within the flawed concept. Nor am I complaining about the difficult conversation in the cave in which the heroine finds she has trapped herself with her own strategy. The problem is in the limiting fatalism that occurs in the heroine's perception and thinking before they meet in the cave. First, she is assuming that her visions are complete and represent all possibilities. I find this an unlikely violation of the chaotic nature of life. Second, she is assuming no other than one of two paths can be taken. In a short term situation, like the conversation in the cave, we might believe that. Over 20 years, it seems unlikely. The number of possibilities is not likely so distinct. The author does not hint at any outside force forcing such a distinction (though the other novels might provide one). And third, based on life experience, it is just not possible to believe that anything good can come out of the heroine diving into such a hellhole of emotional ruin as she does. With real characters it would not produce three wonderful daughters, but at best, three distorted and mean witches. And forth - yes the author cannot stop compounding fundamental errors of character with her clever page by page writing - the closeness of the Tala to their animal nature utterly precludes the kind of 20-year plan the heroine makes, in any kind of reasonable world.
I enjoyed this short story that gave us a look at the world of the Tala and the Twelve Kingdoms. Reading this made me really excited to finally get a chance to read the full length novels in this series.
