Along the way, meet some sweet children from the orphanage of Lars and Marnie and a few of Pendleton's most colorful barnyard animals for some wild humor along the way. The hilarious antics of these animal characters almost steal the show. The author's attention to the minutae in her turn-of-the-century details draw the reader into the story in the most entertaining and intimate way.
Just when I thought the Pendleton Petticoats series could not possibly get any better it DOES with Bertie. As always, this is a wholesome but still full-throttle sweet romantic adventure thankfully devoid of lurid details or profanity. This reviewer has read the entire series and enthusiastically recommends reading the entire Pendleton Petticoats novels beginning with #1 Aundy.

Bertie is a wonderfully written story about two people that have faced great adversity in their young lives. Each of them learning to cope with the struggles and hardships of their past. Bertie moves to Nash's Folly, a ranch belonging to Aundy and Garrett Nash, to help out for the summer and to get away from all the things that keep reminding her of the "incident". At the same time, Riley Walsh buys a ranch next to Nash's Folly and decides to work for Garrett while he fixes up his new home. The chemistry between Bertie and Riley is surprising to them both, and at first, they try to deny it. Working on the same ranch makes this very difficult. Their story took a major twist that I definitely hadn't expected as one of their pasts unfold. (I won't say who or what because it would be a major spoiler.)
Shanna brought back all of our favorite characters so that we could catch up with their lives and, as usual, wrote a book I couldn't put down! The romance was perfect, the dialogue was witty with the perfect touch of sarcasm, and I must say Steve, the mule, had me laughing out loud! Definitely a must read!!!
With each book in the Pendleton Petticoats Series, the reader is there for all the current events in and around Nash's Folly. New people moving into Pendleton come with their own stories and idiosyncrasies....which endear them to the reader wholeheartedly. In this book however, the newest resident comes with a mule by the name of "Steve" who could probably supply enough antics for his own story if he asked Ms Hatfield nicely enough to write if for him. Bertie's story is one of a young woman growing up in front of your eyes as you read. She learns the difference between true love and just being good friends. In addition to Bertie's story is what is happening to the rest of the characters in the series so like me, you'll find yourself anxiously awaiting the next book to come out....and it appears to be very soon. Don't forget, there's a recipe at the end of the story you'll want to try too!
Be sure you have all your housework done before you read Shanna's new rodeo book, as it is very hard to put down once you start reading it. Shanna has once again done an exceptional work of weaving people & their talents together. Cooper is hilarious & I love his sense of humor even if Paige didn't appreciate it at times, made it all the funnier. Shanna has done a wonderful work in showing how people survive the loss of a child or sibling, shows the tenderness of even a cowboy & see into the depth of their heart. I personally have suffered the loss of a four year old niece who spent most of her four years in Children's Hospital so I love how Shanna has woven the great need for selfless compassion for very sick children. Cooper's tenderness toward children is amazing & I appreciate this touch in her story. Then there is Grandpa Nik and what a great grandfather he is & a heart of tenderness in so many ways. Dexter, what can one say that Cooper hasn't already said about him! Hilarious humor through out the book. At times you just want to shake Paige & make her wake up & see what she is doing & thinking & especially not doing that she should be doing. Great characters and a great read & I highly recommend this book to any age to read & enjoy. Thanks Shanna for another great book.
